Abstract

The Potassium Permanganate Plant is designed to produce 40,000 tons per year and will be established in the Manyar District, Gresik Regency. Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) is widely used in various industries as a disinfectant, in wastewater treatment, and in the textile industry. The plant will operate continuously for 24 hours per day over 330 days annually. The raw materials used are manganese dioxide (MnO₂) and potassium hydroxide (KOH), supplied by PT Pamolite Adhesive Industri and PT Karunia Makmur Persada. The production process begins with raw material preparation, where KOH and MnO₂ are conveyed from their respective storage units to bins using screw conveyors and bucket elevators. KOH is dissolved in water at 30°C, then heated to 225°C before reacting with MnO₂ in a reactor to produce potassium manganate (K₂MnO₄) under atmospheric pressure. The reaction mixture is filtered, and the K₂MnO₄ filtrate is subjected to electrolysis at 65°C to produce KMnO₄. The resulting slurry is crystallized at 38°C, separated using a centrifuge, and dried in a rotary dryer at 110°C. Hot air and solid particles from the dryer are separated using a cyclone separator. Finally, the dried KMnO₄ crystals are stored in a product bin, packaged, and moved to storage for distribution.
