Abstract

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is an essential chemical compound widely used in various industries. In Indonesia, the high dependency on imported NaOH presents an opportunity to explore alternative production methods using locally available resources. This research investigates the production of NaOH from bittern solution—a byproduct of salt crystallization rich in sodium ions—using the membrane electrolysis method. The experiment utilized graphite electrodes and a cation-exchange membrane to conduct the electrolysis under varying voltages (6–14 V) and durations (1–3 hours). The highest NaOH concentration achieved was 15.53% at 12 volts and 1 hour of electrolysis time, indicating this condition as optimal. The results showed that both voltage and duration significantly affected the yield and purity of NaOH, with excessive values leading to reduced efficiency due to competing side reactions and gas evolution. This study demonstrates the potential of bittern as a raw material for producing NaOH, contributing to the valorization of salt industry waste and reducing reliance on imported chemicals.
