Abstract
Ideally in a complete family there are intact parents (father and mother) and with the existence of a complete family will not make the child's psychological changes. But many are found in big cities, such as Surabaya, a family led only by a single parent. Being a single parent who has children in their teens and lives in ex-localization is a difficult problem because of the time they have to work outside the home and the negative stigma that still exists in society. Concerns also arise about the impact of the scope of association and also poor friendships. So that single parents have to supervise and educate their children more strictly. This situation and condition that the researchers found in the area of Putat Jaya Subdistrict, especially the area of ex-localization of dolly. So this study aims to know and describe how the application of single parent communication patterns in shaping the concept of children's self in the area of Putat Jaya. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method while for data collection techniques in this study using interviews (in depth interviews) on single parents and children in early adolescence. From the results of the study it can be concluded that despite living in an area with a negative stigma but the single parents claim not to worry about it because single parents apply a balanced pattern of communication and accompanying the attitude of acceptance and also the form of control given to children so as not to give influence on the formation of self -concept in children and from the application of these communication patterns the single parents successfully form a positive self -concept in their children. It is also inseparable from the predicate of a “child-worthy city” received by the City of Surabaya, which is shown by a strong commitment in fulfilling the rights and also the protection of children.
