Abstract

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a crucial chemical compound widely used in various industries, yet its domestic demand in Indonesia is still heavily dependent on imports. This research aims to explore the potential of bittern—residual brine from salt production—as a local raw material source for NaOH synthesis using the membrane cell electrolysis method. Bittern, which contains a high concentration of Na⁺ ions, was subjected to electrolysis using graphite electrodes and a cation exchange membrane. The effects of varying voltage (6–14 V) and electrolysis duration (1–3 hours) were investigated to determine optimal operational conditions. The highest NaOH concentration obtained was 15.53% at 12 V and 1 hour of electrolysis. Results showed that excessive voltage or prolonged electrolysis time reduced product purity due to side reactions and increased gas formation. This study demonstrates that membrane electrolysis is a viable and efficient method for converting bittern into valuable NaOH, offering an opportunity to reduce NaOH imports and utilize industrial waste more sustainably.
