Abstract
The increasing pollution of surface water due to human activities demands efficient treatment efforts, one of which is through the hydraulic coagulation process. This study aims to evaluate the effect of baffle quantity in a hydraulic coagulation reactor on the removal efficiency of Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and turbidity in the Jagir River water, Surabaya, using four types of coagulants: Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC), Alum, FeCl₃, and FeSO₄. The experiment was conducted using variations in the number of baffles: 26, 30, 34, 38, and 42 units, with sedimentation times of 30, 60, and 90 minutes. TSS and turbidity were analyzed using gravimetric and turbidimetric methods, while floc size was analyzed using a Particle Size Analyzer (PSA). The results showed that the highest TSS removal efficiency of 96% was achieved using FeSO₄ with 42 baffles and a 90-minute settling time, while the highest turbidity removal efficiency of 99% was obtained using PAC with 30 baffles and a 90-minute settling time. Baffles function to create controlled turbulence, enabling more effective mixing between coagulants and suspended particles in the water. Proper mixing is essential to optimize the charge neutralization reaction by the coagulant. Therefore, the optimal number of baffles and the appropriate type of coagulant are critical factors in enhancing the efficiency of the hydraulic coagulation process. Keywords: hydraulic coagulation, baffle, TSS, turbidity, PAC, floc
