Abstract

This study examines the reformation of the Chicano Movement as a social movement during the first presidency of Donald Trump in the United States (2015–2019). The background of this research is the escalation of socially and politically discriminatory situations, harsh anti-immigrant policies, and political rhetoric characterized by xenophobia and racism directed toward the Chicano community. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a literature review approach, analyzing secondary data in the form of scholarly literature, organizational documents, media reports, and digital archives related to events, actions, and policies during the aforementioned period. Utilizing the theoretical framework of new social movements by Alberto Melucci and the identity-oriented theory by Hunt and Benford, the research finds that collective identity serves as the primary foundation strengthening awareness and collective action within the Chicano community. The manifestation of this identity is evident through solidarity and commitment, which take the form of protests, cultural festivals, art, and legal advocacy. Solidarity and commitment have proven to be the main drivers of the movement's sustainability amid internal challenges such as ideological, generational, and coordination differences, as well as external obstacles including white supremacist pressures and discriminatory policies. This study asserts that the Chicano Movement in the Trump era stands as evidence of the resilience of social movements in the pursuit of justice and minority rights.
