Abstract

The Vanillin Plant from Lignin using an Acidification Process, with a capacity of 25,000 tons per year, is planned to be established in the Serpong area, South Tangerang. In the chemical industry, vanillin is used in the production of lignin, nitrobenzene, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, and ethyl acetate. This plant will operate 24 hours a day and 330 days a year. The vanillin plant uses lignin as the raw material, obtained from black liquor supplied by PT. Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper. The production process begins with mixing lignin, 48% NaOH, and 99.5% nitrobenzene, which is then pumped to a pressure of 10 bar and heated to 110°C before entering the oxidation reactor for 1 hour, producing vanillin, azobenzene, and impurities. The product is depressurized to 1 bar and separated in a centrifuge; the vanillin stream proceeds to the acidification stage with HCl, followed by reverse osmosis to remove salts. The vanillin solution is extracted using ethyl acetate, separated, evaporated, and crystallized in a crystallizer, then separated, dried, filtered, and stored in a storage tank once it reaches a particle size of 100 mesh.
