Abstract

Changes in geopolitical conditions in Asia have given new heights to the foreign policy patterns of Asian countries. One of the foreign policies that emerged as a response to Asian geopolitical changes was the Act East Policy by India which aims to build strategic relationships with India's non- traditional partners in order to achieve security for the development and growth of the Indian economy. One of India's partners in Act East Policy is South Korea. This research is specifically aimed at analyzing the reasons for choosing South Korea as a partner in the Act East Policy in 2014. The analysis will be carried out using partner selection theory in a strategic partnership. Hence it can be concluded that the selection of South Korea as a partner in the Act East Policy was based on suitable strategic interests, the benefits obtained are justifiable with the sacrifices that can be given by cooperating with South Korea, India's capability in utilizing South Korea's power in achieving India’s development interests and a high degree of compatibility seen through a common vision of the international system, a common ideology, non-contradictory values, and a harmonious historical context between India and South Korea. Keywords: Act East Policy, Partner Selection, India, South Korea
