Abstract
Soil salinity poses a significant constraint on plant development, especially in regions experiencing salt buildup. This research investigates the role of subsurface drainage in lowering soil salinity via leaching and examines its influence on the growth of spinach (Amaranthus tricolor). The experiment was conducted by applying saline soil mixtures at ratios of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% with non-saline soil and using subsurface drainage to accelerate the leaching of salts. The observed parameters included pH, electrical conductivity (EC), sodium (Na) content, and plant growth. Observations were conducted at intervals of 1, 10, 20, and 30 days with three replications. The results showed that subsurface drainage significantly reduced soil salinity in a relatively short time. The decrease in salt levels positively affected the growth of spinach, particularly in treatments with lower salinity ratios. These findings indicate that subsurface drainage can be an effective solution for mitigating soil salinity issues in agricultural land to enhance crop productivity.
