Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of income inequality, average length of schooling, economic growth, and domestic investment (PMDN) on poverty levels in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) over the period 2009–2023. Despite experiencing consistent and positive economic growth, DIY paradoxically maintains the highest poverty rate among provinces in Java. This phenomenon raises critical questions about the effectiveness of growth and investment in reducing poverty, prompting a deeper analysis of contributing factors. The study utilizes secondary time series data from five districts/cities in DIY, collected from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and the Regional Development Planning, Research, and Innovation Agency. Through the application of multiple linear regression and classical assumption testing, the empirical findings reveal that income inequality, economic growth, and PMDN have no significant impact on poverty levels in the region. In contrast, the average length of schooling is found to have a significant negative effect on poverty, indicating that higher education levels contribute to poverty reduction. These results underscore the pivotal role of education in addressing multidimensional poverty and suggest that policy efforts should prioritize equitable access to quality education alongside strategies to reduce income disparities.
