Abstract

This study examines Russian intervention in the Syrian conflict in 2015, a year that marked a crucial turning point in the prolonged civil war. Using descriptive qualitative research methods, the study analyzes Russia’s military involvement, focusing on the airstrike campaign, the provision of advanced weaponry, and the training of Syrian government forces under Bashar al-Assad's leadership. The intervention, which began in late September 2015, aimed to strengthen the Assad regime against opposition groups and the Islamic State (ISIS) while serving Russia’s strategic interests, including maintaining military bases in Tartus and Latakia. The study highlights how Russian airstrikes targeted terrorist groups and moderate opposition forces, resulting in significant civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. Additionally, the logistical route known as the "Syrian Express" enabled the continuous supply of military resources, further reinforcing Russia’s geopolitical influence in the Middle East. The research findings indicate that, while the intervention bolstered Assad’s position and altered the conflict's dynamics, it also exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, prolonged the war, and heightened regional tensions. This study contributes to our understanding of military intervention in internal conflicts and its geopolitical implications. It underscores the need for balanced diplomatic efforts to address such crises. Keywords: Military Intervention, Syrian Conflict, Airstrikes
