Abstract

The laundry activity will generate waste that can pollute water if not treated before disposal, as laundry waste is predominantly derived from fabric softeners and detergents that are widely used. One treatment method that can be applied is the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR), a biological treatment system that utilizes biofilm grown in an attached growth system on media with a large surface area. The media move dynamically, allowing effective contact between the wastewater and microorganisms. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the MBBR method with variations in the addition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial starters in reducing COD, phosphate, and detergent levels, as well as observing pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and MLSS in laundry wastewater. The study also includes Total Plate Count (TPC) analysis to determine the number of bacterial colonies that grow on the biofilm with various starter bacteria concentrations during the seeding process. It was found that at a contact time of 28 hours and with a 10% addition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa starter, COD levels decreased by 87% from 972.80 mg/L to 127.68mg/L, detergent (MBAS) levels decreased by 96% from 73.34 mg/L to 2.61 mg/L, and the highest reduction in phosphate levels was 74%, from 25.78 mg/L to 6.63 mg/L. With the addition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa starter, the number of colonies in the biofilm was recorded as follows: 0% addition resulted in 101.000 CFU/mL, 3% in 110.000 CFU/mL, 5% in 184.000 CFU/mL, 7% in 234.000 CFU/mL, and 10% in 338.000 CFU/mL
