Abstract
Citizen diplomacy refers to the contribution of citizens in diplomatic activities, which are usually the domain of official state representatives. Keraton is one example of the implementation of citizen diplomacy carried out by the Indonesian Association at the University of Washington (ISAUW), an Indonesian student organization at the University of Washington (UW), established in 2001. Keraton is an annual cultural festival aimed at promoting Indonesian culture. It has been held since 2011 and takes place every year. Keraton is conceptually similar to a "pasar minggu" (Sunday market) in Indonesia, which features a wide variety of traditional Indonesian food and games (folklore), such as bakiak, congklak, and others. In addition, there are performances by music groups, traditional dances, and batik fashion shows to introduce and promote Indonesian culture. This research uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach, collecting primary data through interviews and secondary data through literature review and social media analysis. The scope of this research starts from 2011, when Keraton was first held, to 2024, the most recent Keraton event. In this study, the author uses the theory of citizen diplomacy and analyzes the role of society in diplomacy based on the five types of citizen diplomats according to Paul Sharp. The research results show that the Keraton event has proven to be an effective means of introducing Indonesian culture to the international community and strengthening the relationship between Indonesia and the international community, with active participation from the Indonesian diaspora. Keywords: Citizen Diplomacy, Indonesian Association at University of Washington, Keraton.
