Abstract

ABSTRACT Mass media plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion, disseminating information, and framing the social realities consumed by the public. Furthermore, in the digital era, mass media has transformed into online platforms, making the flow of information faster and more accessible. However, this advancement has not been fully matched by improvements in journalistic ethical standards, particularly in the coverage of gender-based violence cases, including femicide. This study aims to analyze how two major online media outlets in Indonesia, Tempo.co and Tribunnews.com, Framed the femicide case that occurred in Ngawi, East Java, in January 2025. The analysis employs Robert N. Entman’s framing elements: problem definition, causal interpretation, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. The findings of this study show that Tribunnews.com tends to use sensational framing and lacks a victim-centered approach. The reports emphasize the victim's physical condition and the chronology of the event in an explicit manner, without considering the structural context of gender-based violence. In contrast, Tempo.co presents a more ethical, balanced, and victim-supportive framing. The coverage in this media outlet focuses on facts, the context of gender inequality, and the importance of protecting women. This study also highlights the phenomenon of revictimization through symbolic violence in media reporting. These findings underline the urgent need for the implementation of strict journalistic ethical standards and the enhancement of gender literacy among journalists, as well as media literacy among the public. Mass media not only serves as an information provider but also as an agent of social change that can contribute to the elimination of violence against women.
