Abstract

A sodium silicate factory using sodium hydroxide and sand via a wet process, with a capacity of 45,000 tons/year, is planned to be established in the Tuban area, East Java, specifically in the Tuban Industrial Estate (KIT). In the paper industry, sodium silicate is used as an adhesive and an additive for coating. Additionally, sodium silicate can also be used in water treatment as a flocculation agent. This factory will operate for 330 days per year. The process of making sodium silicate briefly involves channeling a 48% liquid NaOH solution into a mixer to which 98% silica sand is added to form a slurry. Both are then channeled into a reactor and will react at a temperature between 245°C and a pressure of 32 atm for 35 minutes. The result of this reaction is liquid sodium silicate, which is then directed to an evaporator to concentrate it and reduce the workload of the crystallizer. In the crystallizer, the liquid phase is converted into a solid. Subsequently, these crystals are separated from the liquid using a centrifuge, producing sodium silicate powder or granules as the main product. This sodium silicate powder or granules are then fed into a dry conveyor to ensure dryness and continue to a cooler conveyor to lower the temperature to normal. Finally, the product is fed into a ball mill to reduce and standardize its size, resulting in a ready-to-use sodium silicate product.
