Abstract
Activated carbon is a solid material with pores, containing 85% - 95% carbon and 5% - 15% deposits. Activated carbon undergoes activation processes both physically and chemically. Physical activation involves charring, while chemical activation involves soaking the char in chemical substances. Activated carbon is commonly used as an adsorbent. Banana peel is composed of carbonaceous compounds, namely lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, in amounts of 8.90%, 9.90%, and 41.38%, respectively. These compounds can be used to make activated carbon from green banana peel. This research aims to determine the effect of temperature and time of the pyrolysis process of green banana peel waste on ash content, moisture content, and BET surface area tests, as well as to determine the surface area of activated carbon from green banana peel using the BET test. The research method includes raw material preparation, pyrolysis process, activation, and result testing. The research results show that the time and temperature of the pyrolysis process have a significant effect on the characteristics of activated carbon from green banana peel in terms of ash content, moisture content, and BET surface area analysis. The best results for activated carbon from green banana peel were obtained at a temperature of 400°C with a time of 150 minutes, resulting in a BET surface area of 313.089 m²/g and a single point surface area of 323.1100 m²/g. In conclusion, the best results obtained do not yet meet the SNI 06-3730-1995 quality standard, and therefore cannot yet be used as an alternative raw material for activated carbon production.
