Abstract

Activated carbon is a solid material characterized by its porous structure, consisting of 85% to 95% carbon and 5% to 15% deposits. It undergoes physical and chemical activation processes, with physical activation involving charcoal and chemical activation involving soaking charcoal in chemical substances. Activated carbon is primarily utilized as an adsorbent. Banana peels contain carbon compounds such as lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose in proportions of 8.90%, 9.90%, and 41.38%, respectively. These compounds enable the use of green banana peels in the production of activated carbon. The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of temperature and duration of the pyrolysis process on the ash content, moisture content, and BET surface area of activated carbon derived from green banana peel. The research methodology includes raw material preparation, pyrolysis processing, activation, and testing of the results. Findings indicate that the time and temperature during pyrolysis significantly influence the characteristics of activated carbon from green banana peels, affecting ash content, moisture content, and BET surface area analysis. The optimal results were achieved at a temperature of 400°C for 150 minutes, yielding a BET surface area of 313.089 m²/g and a single-point surface area of 323.1100 m²/g. In conclusion, while the best results obtained do not meet the quality standards set by SNI 06-3730-1995, they indicate that activated carbon from green banana peels is not yet suitable as an alternative raw material for activated carbon production.
