Abstract

Plastic waste is a serious problem in Indonesia and even the world. The National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry shows that in 2023, the amount of national waste generation will be around 18 million tons and around 18% of which will be plastic waste or around 3.5 million tons. It is necessary to develop bioplastic materials so that they can be decomposed naturally by microorganisms into environmentally friendly compounds, one of which is using Ulva Lactuca or sea lettuce. This research was conducted to determine the effect of variations in the composition of materials for making bioplastic products, such as the cellulose content of Ulva Lactuca or sea lettuce and the addition of chitosan from Tegillarca Granosa shells as a filler to increase physical mechanical characteristics such as decomposition speed, tensile strength and elongation, and water resistance in bioplastics. Data analysis uses mathematical calculations and descriptive analysis with the results of tests on the physical mechanical characteristics of bioplastics including tensile strength, elongation, biodegradation tests and water absorption tests. The analysis in this research shows the optimum value of the tensile strength test is 0.314 MPa, elongation is 268.79%, biodegradation percentage is 99.41%, water absorption percentage is 0.98%, and thickness value is 0.244 mm. The physical-mechanical characteristics of the bioplastics produced do not fully meet applicable standards. However, with some qualities that meet standards, it can be seen that the potential of sea lettuce and chitosan from Tegillarca Granosa shells requires further research and development. Keywords: bioplastics; cellulose; chitosan; glycerol; sea lettuce.
