Abstract
Mental health is a crucial aspect of individual well-being, particularly among adolescents aged 16324, who are at a vulnerable stage of emotional and social development. However, a lack of understanding and societal stigma often hinders young people from recognizing and addressing mental health issues. This study aims to design an educational medium in the form of a webtoon to raise mental health awareness among adolescents within this age group. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, which includes literature studies, in-depth interviews with mental health experts and the target audience, as well as a design needs analysis. The findings, obtained through qualitative descriptive analysis, interviews, questionnaires, and literature reviews, reveal that webtoons, as a popular interactive visual medium, have significant potential for delivering mental health messages in a manner that is both accessible and engaging for adolescents. Key design elements include relatable characters, emotionally supportive storylines, and the use of colors that enhance a positive mood. By incorporating themes of psychology and drama, such as the portrayal of mental health disorder symptoms through characters, challenges in coping with depression, and the importance of seeking professional help, the webtoon is expected to increase awareness and understanding of mental health among adolescents and young adults. Furthermore, this initiative encourages individuals to seek professional assistance, such as from clinical psychologists or psychiatrists, when facing mental health challenges, which can arise unpredictably in any individual. Proper treatment provides the best solutions and pathways to overcoming any mental health disorder. This design project aims to contribute to the development of innovative and inclusive educational media that not only aligns with the media preferences of younger generations but also helps reduce societal stigma surrounding mental health. In the future, this project can be further developed by leveraging broader digital distribution platforms to reach a more diverse audience. Keywords: Mental Health, Adolescents, Webtoon, Digital Comic, Mental Health Awareness
