Abstract
Along with the development of the times, shadow puppet shows have experienced a process of decline. In fact, shadow puppet shows have good values and mandates in their stories. The complex linguistic elements and the time of the performance at night are often the reasons. By using descriptive qualitative research methods (interviews, observations, and questionnaires), it was revealed that respondents aged 16-24 years from the questionnaire preferred to stay up late to play gadgets rather than watch wayang. The phenomenon of the times and the development of gadgets, requires wayang to adapt. The challenge of popularizing wayang was answered in the 1950s through the medium of printed comics popularized by R.A. Kosasih with his work entitled “Mahabarata” using a realist drawing style. Furthermore, in 2010, printed wayang comics were again popularized by Is Yuniarto through his work “Garudayana” using a semi-realist / semi-cartoon drawing style. Where, changes in image styles and media at that time were greatly influenced by the times. Therefore, it is necessary to transfer of mediums to adapt one media to another. The right media to communicate the current wayang story is digital comics through the current favorite is LINE Webtoon because it can be accessed through gadgets. For this reason, a story that has relevance to the problems of 16-24 year olds who are most of the webtoon readers is needed. So a webtoon was designed by adapting the Sadewa Krama carangan play centered on the puppet story of Raden Sadewa and Dewi Rawaulan. This webtoon is titled Sadewa Keama: True Love. The main characters are not only from wayang, but also from the modern world, namely Satya and Wulan, which raises the unrest or problems of individuals aged 16-24 years, especially late adolescents and young adults. This is used as a bridge (relevance) between the mindset of late adolescent readers who tend to want to imitate adult behavior (which is not appropriate) and young adults who tend to look for compatibility with the puppet story that will be told in the webtoon. After the data was collected, the design began with concept formulation. The keyword chosen was “searching for the meaning of true love”. Then, it continued with the formulation of creative, verbal, visual, and media concepts. The design process includes character design, thumbnail design, title display design, background design, main media design (webtoon), and supporting media design.
