Abstract

The media industry is required to survive amidst competition between media. All media compete with each other to win audiences and gain profits. One strategy to survive in this media competition is to implement commodification in order to gain profits. Radio Mercury 96 FM Surabaya as an industrial media also carries out commodification through one of its programs called "Rumah UMKM". This study discusses the practice of commodification in the "Rumah UMKM" program on Radio Mercury 96 FM Surabaya. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, where data is collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. The data are then analyzed using Vincent Mosco's commodification theory (commodification of content, workers, and audiences). The results of the study show that Radio Mercury 96 FM Surabaya through the "Rumah UMKM" program carries out commodification. The practice of commodification carried out by Radio Mercury 96 FM Surabaya is applied through the story of the journey of UMKM in the program broadcast, workers or employees involved, and the use of listeners and program participants to increase profits for the media.
