Abstract
Wastewater from chicken slaughterhouses is often discharged directly into the environment or open water without treatment. RPA wastewater contains organic parameters derived from rumen contents, chicken blood, chicken washing activities and sludge derived from fat deposits. Some of the high pollutant parameters in RPA waste are Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Nitrogen. One effective and simple method to treat RPA wastewater is by using Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR). The MBBR process is a combination of activated sludge and biofilter processes with the addition of media that will become a place for microorganisms to attach. This study aims to determine the ability of the MBBR reactor using the Anoxic-oxic process in reducing COD parameters, Total Nitrogen and MLSS and SVI analysis. In addition, the structure and content of biofilm were analyzed. There are two variations used in this study, namely, media variation and residence time. The research was conducted in a batch manner and then continued in a continuous manner. In this study, the Sponge (Biocube) process was the best media to remove organic parameters using Anoxic and oxic systems. In continuous research, the highest percent removal values of COD and Total Nitrogen were 92% and 71%. MLSS levels were higher in K5 media using Anoxic and oxic systems. This indicates that in K5 media microorganisms are more dominant in suspended growth. The SEM-EDX test results showed biofilm attached to the sponge wall and there was a break or slughing. The content contained in the biofilm on EDAX reading, it can be seen that the biofilm contains compounds of C (4.57%), O (45.47%), N (5.53%), S (0.78%) and P (1.8%).
