Abstract
The growth and development of industry around rivers has the potential to contribute large amounts of organic waste, namely BOD and COD. Determining the content of organic substances in water is usually done by measuring the need for oxygen in the water to degrade organic substances, either with the help of microorganisms, chemicals, and other methods. Adsorption is a technology that can be used for this problem, by using bioadsorbents which have a large surface area and are good for use in the adsorption process in controlling organic substances that are not dissolved in water, making it more efficient for removing BOD and COD. This research aims to analyze the ability of bioadsorbents from corn husks and shallot skins to reduce levels of BOD and COD parameters. The research method used was experimental using Mangetan Canal river water in Sidoarjo Regency. The research was carried out using a bioadsorbent that was activated using a 5% H3PO4 solution and a reactor that varied the detention time/contact time which affected the dimensions of the reactor column. From the research results, it was found that the application of corn husk and onion husk waste as an adsorbent in a continuous adsorption process produced optimal percent removal of BOD of 64.1%; COD 72.5%; BOD 73.3%; COD 85%. This value was obtained from variations in contact time of 40 minutes, where the greater the amount of adsorbent used, the greater the surface area of the adsorbent used to bind the adsorbate, thereby increasing the removal efficiency.
