Abstract

Crude palm oil (CPO) is a vegetable oil obtained from the extraction process of oil palm fruit flesh. The use of palm oil as fuel is typically done through the process of producing biodiesel. However, this process still requires a relatively high cost, making it less economical. Additionally, a major obstacle in the use of vegetable oil from crude palm oil (CPO) is its high viscosity, which can cause clogging in fuel injector channels in diesel engines. Therefore, modifications are needed to improve the characteristics of CPO so it can be directly used as diesel engine fuel, specifically through heating and the addition of the additive 2-EHN. This study was conducted to optimize the enhancement of CPO characteristics using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to determine the best combination of temperature and 2-EHN concentration that produces optimal response values. In this study, the optimal point was achieved at a temperature of 50°C and a 2% concentration of 2-EHN. The CPO characteristic test results showed a viscosity of 4.45 cSt; a density of 0.884 g/ml; a cetane number of 56.9; and a calorific value of 9314 kcal/kg.
