Abstract
Chili pepper plants as mutant plants have experienced changes in character when compared to the original variety. The purpose of this study was to determine the genetic diversity, the correlation between morphological characters and agronomic characters, and the existence of superior strains for favorable traits in mutant (M5) cayenne pepper. This research is a one-factor experiment arranged based on a Randomized Group Design. The plants tested consisted of 11 mutant strains, 1 plant without radiation (control) and two commercial varieties as a comparison, repeated 3 times with 4 sample plants. The observation variables included quantitative characters (plant height, number of leaves, stem length, canopy width, flowering age, number of flowers, productive branches, number of fruits, fruit length, fruit diameter, weight per fruit and total fruit weight per plant), as well as qualitative characters (hypocotyl color, leaf shape, growth type, flower location, flower crown color, flower crown shape, anther color, pistil, petal pigmentation, intermediate phase fruit color, fruit color at maturity, fruit shape and seed size). Data were analyzed for variance (ANOVA), with a further test of BNJ 5%, as well as using genetic parameters (Genetic Diversity Coefficient (GFC), Phenotypic Diversity Coefficient (KKF), Standard Deviation of Genetic Variance, Heritability), followed by dendrogram analysis using NTSYS 2.1, and correlation analysis of phenotype and genotype. The results showed very significant differences in all quantitative characters observed from the results of the analysis of variance. Genetic diversity in the broad category and heritability is high in all quantitative characters. Dendrogram analysis showed that 10 mutant strains were distantly related to the comparison variety (Dewata), between mutant strains that were distantly related were M5-10 with M5-1. Genotype correlation analysis showed positive results and in the high category, especially on production characters. In general, the genotype correlation value is greater than the phenotype correlation value. Key words: Fifth generation mutant (M5); genetic diversity; correlation; high-yielding lines.
