Abstract

Aluminum cable waste has good coagulant properties if it can be synthesized into Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) because the active aluminate group can collect suspended material in water into flocks in the water purification process. In this study, PAC was made by hydrolyzing aluminum samples with 33% HCl solution. The sample was then left for 1 day to complete the hydrolysis process. After the AlCl3 solution was formed, the polymerization process was carried out with monomer variations of 10; 15; 20; 25; 30 (ml), and the addition of Na2CO3 solution as an initiator with concentration variations of 3; 4; 5; 6; 7 (N). The data obtained were then optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to determine the variation of factors to obtain optimal results. The resulting PAC was then tested to determine its ability to reduce the turbidity of wastewater. The best results were obtained after optimization with a decrease in the turbidity of synthetic waste from 4400 NTU to 2.6085 NTU, namely in the combination of AlCl3 volume variables of 25.992 ml and Na2CO3 initiator concentration of 5.248 N. This value has met PERMENKES No.492 / MENKES / PER / IV / 2010, namely the minimum turbidity of clean water is 4 NTU. The synthesized PAC was also characterized by its functional groups using an FTIR spectrophotometer. The peak wavelength formed in FTIR is at 3346.28 cm-1 which indicates the presence of a stretching vibration functional group of -OH, at a peak wavelength of 1628.82 cm-1 which indicates the bending vibration of the H2O molecule and at a peak wavelength of 583.10 cm-1 which indicates the presence of an aluminate group.
