Abstract
A melamine plant with a capacity of 40,000 tons/year will be established in Cikampek, Karawang. This plant will operate for 24 hours a day and for 330 days a year. This melamine plant uses urea raw materials from Pupuk Kujang, Cikampek and Alumina as a catalyst obtained from Well Harvest Winning Alumina Refinery. Melamine is one of the chemicals in the form of white crystals. Generally melamine is used in the lamination industry, adhesives, molding compounds in household furniture, and coatings. Melamine can be produced from two main processes, namely the low pressure process using catalysts and the high pressure process without catalysts. This plant uses a low pressure process using a catalyst, namely the BASF process using urea raw materials and alumina catalysts reacted in a Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) type reactor.
