Abstract
This research develops the manufacture of mask filters by utilizing water hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes) cellulose into cellulose acetate. The mask filter is molded with a simple glass plate to produce a mask filter efficiency that complies with SNI. The process in this study was influenced by the comparative factors of stirring speed and acetylation time in the process of making cellulose acetate from water hyacinth stem cellulose fibers. The stirring speed variations used were 350 rpm, 450 rpm, 550 rpm, 650 rpm, and 750 rpm, and acetylation time in the range of 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes, 30 minutes, and 35 minutes. This study was conducted to determine the results of cellulose acetate with the best acetyl content from these variations, so that later it will qualify as cellulose acetate for making mask filters. The acetyl content produced from water hyacinth stem cellulose acetate has potential as a material for making filter masks with a range of 36.5% - 42.2%. This study succeeded in obtaining acetyl content in accordance with this range where the best conditions obtained at a stirring speed of 550 rpm for 15 minutes and 20 minutes amounted to 39.45% and 38.45%. The results showed the effect of the variation, namely the greater the stirring speed, the smaller the acetyl content formed. The longer the acetylation time, the smaller the acetyl content, both conditions are directly proportional to the acetyl content produced. The cellulose acetate that has been produced is utilized as a mask filter with an acetyl content of 39.45%, successfully obtaining a Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE) value of 83.6%. The efficiency value of this mask filter is in accordance with SNI.
