Abstract
Benzyl Alcohol from Benzyl Chloride and Water with Hydrolysis Process at a capacity of 85,000 tons/year will be established in JIIPE Gresik Industrial Estate, Jalan Raya Manyar KM 11 Manyarejo, Manyar Sido Rukun, Manyar District, Gresik Regency, East Java. This Benzyl alcohol uses a continuous operating system for 24 hours a day with 330 working days and 160 employees. This plant uses Benzyl chloride raw materials which are obtained from Hebei Hongbang, Co.Ltd, China and water obtained from the kalimireng river in Gresik. The product produced is benzyl alcohol 99%. Benzyl alcohol can be utilized in various industries, one of which is the pharmaceutical industry. pharmaceutical industry for additions in the manufacture of medicines and health care as a flavor enhancer, fragrance and preservative. In the cosmetics industry for flavor enhancers and fragrances in the manufacture of cosmetic products. In the paint industry for solvents in the manufacture of inks, paints, varnishes and epoxy resin coatings and paint removers. The production process used in this benzyl alcohol plant is a hydrolysis process. In the raw material preparation stage, benzyl chloride in liquid form is fed to the mixing tank to be mixed with water, using a ratio of 1: 40 kmol (1 kmol benzyl chloride: 40 kmol water) in accordance with US Patent 5728897. In addition, the mixing tank is fed with the recycle from the distillation tower so that the mixture will be in the form of a liquid which will later be fed to the reactor. In this process, the hydrolysis reaction between benzyl chloride and water occurs at 130 ° C and 1 atm using a stirred tank flow reactor so that continuous production is obtained with lower equipment maintenance costs and better quality.
