Abstract
The utilization of shell waste is considered ineffective, other than for crafts. Shells contain many beneficial compounds if utilized properly. One of the contents of shells, namely calcium carbonate, can be used for the formation and synthesis of hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite, abbreviated as HAp and has the chemical formula Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, shows similarities to the inorganic mineral components of bones and teeth. One of the techniques used to synthesize hydroxyapatite is the precipitation method. Precipitation is the process of forming solids (sediments) in solution as a result of a chemical reaction, which is influenced by the acidity level (pH). The thorny shell is a type of shell that contains high levels of CaCO3 and is often found in coastal areas. The purpose of this study is to synthesize hydroxyapatite using thorny shells through the precipitation method. Before being synthesized, the thorn clam shells were precipitated first to produce a purer Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC). This study was also conducted to understand how the degree of acidity (pH) and the Ca/P mole ratio affect the product yield. The products formed were then analyzed to determine their characteristics using FTIR and SEM-EDX. The study was conducted 25 times with different variables, namely pH and the Ca/P mole ratio. The results showed that pH affected the product yield value. Increasing pH caused an increase in product yield. The most optimal hydroxyapatite product was obtained at pH 9, with a Ca/P mole ratio of 1.67. The optimal hydroxyapatite was then analyzed using the FTIR method, which identified functional groups such as CO32-, PO43, and OH- which are components of hydroxyapatite. In addition, the analysis of the morphological structure of hydroxyapatite crystals using SEM also revealed that hydroxyapatite has a spherical structure and tends to clump.
