Abstract
Speaking is considered as the most important skill to be taught in learning English if the learning objectives are related to students' communicative competence. Furthermore, English has become an international language or global language which is used in all fields. Therefore, students need the ability to speak English to be able to interact with others, start conversations, share ideas, and have a discussion. Unfortunately, in its practical application, English Language Teaching (ELT) in Indonesia still focuses on test-based pedagogy rather than improving students' communicative competence. This phenomenon is on the contrary to the learning outcomes stated in English curriculum in Indonesia. This paper is a literature review that focuses on presenting several innovative speaking activities to improve the speaking skills of high school students in Indonesia. Referring to the current condition, namely the covid-19 pandemic, this paper will also provide an overview of how this activity can be done in online learning.
