Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify the optimal operational parameters for producing activated carbon and to establish its maximum copper adsorption capacity. The synthesis process commences by subjecting cassava stems to carbonization at temperatures of 150, 200, 250, 300, and 350 oC for a duration of 90 minutes. Next, carbon is crushed and filtered to achieve a particle size of 100 mesh. Carbon was submerged in a ZnCl2 solution with concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%, using a ratio of 1 gram of carbon to 50 ml of solution. The solution was immersed for a duration of 1 hour, subsequently strained, and the activated carbon was rinsed with water until it reached a pH level of 7, after which it was dried. In addition, when 1 gram of activated carbon comes into contact with 100 ml of copper solution, it should be agitated for 10 minutes and then left undisturbed for 60 minutes. The findings indicate that the most effective activated carbon was produced at a carbonization temperature of 250 oC and a ZnCl2 concentration of 20%. This carbon exhibited a copper absorption capacity of 105.2632 mg/g, a water content of 2.01%, a volatile matter content of 11.09%, an ash content of 5.58%, and a carbon content of 81.32%.
