Abstract

After the establishment of PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja which was located in Palembang in 1959, the government also thought about building other fertilizer factories. The embryo of PT Petrokimia Gresik originated in 1956 through the State Planning Bureau (BPN). Initially, the fertilizer factory to be built in East Java was called the 'Surabaya Petrochemical Project'. The name Petrokimia itself comes from 'Petroleum Chemical" which is shortened to Petrochemical, namely chemicals made from petroleum and gas. The Surabaya Petrokimia Project was formed based on MPRS Decree No. II of 1960 which was listed as a Priority Project in the Universal Planned National Development Pattern Phase I (1961-1969) and strengthened by Presidential Decree No. 260 of 1960. The construction of the project was based on Presidential Instruction No.1/Instr/1963 and declared a Vital Project in accordance with Presidential Decree no. 225 of 1963 The Gresik area as a fertilizer factory location was the result of a feasibility study in 1962 by the Industrial Projects Preparation Agency (BP3I) coordinated by the Department of Basic Industry and Mining. At that time, Gresik was considered ideal considering, among others: -There is enough vacant land available covering an area of 450 hectares - Quite close to the availability of water sources from the Brantas River and the Bengawan Solo River - Close to the largest fertilizer consumer areas, namely plantations and sugar cane farmers - Close to the port, making it easier to transport factory equipment during the construction period, procurement of raw materials, and distribution of production results via sea transportation. - Close to Surabaya which has adequate equipment, including the availability of human resources.
