Abstract

Cassava is usually processed into flour or food ingredients after it is harvested, but only 10% of the total stem height is utilized, which can be replanted, the rest becomes waste. Cassava stem waste has the potential to be used as biochar because it has a high C content so it can provide a good environment for soil microbes and many other benefits. The purpose of this research is to make biochar from cassava stem waste and compare it with SNI biochar which is also suitable as a soil amendment requirement. The quality of this biochar can be determined based on its characteristics, namely moisture content, ash content, volatile matter content, and carbon content. In this study, the pyrolysis process was used with results indicating a significant effect of variations in operating conditions on the quality characteristics of biochar. The variables used in this study were pyrolysis time and temperature of 30;45;60;75;90 minutes and 250;300;400;450˚C and relatively good conditions were obtained at 400˚C for 75 minutes with a grade carbon amounting to 72.4300%; ash content 8.8559%; water content 1.6459%; and volatile matter content of 17.0682%.
