Abstract
Gresik is one of the districts in East Java Province and serves as a strategic area for the development of national economic centers, including industry, trade and services, agriculture, fisheries, and tourism. Therefore, Gresik District often faces various challenges and issues, one of which is urbanization. Urbanization has led to the conversion of much productive agricultural land into built-up areas. According to the Agricultural Strategic Plan of Gresik District for 2021-2026, several strategic issues related to agriculture include the high rate of agricultural land conversion to non-agricultural uses, efforts to ensure food availability through increased food production being vulnerable to global warming issues and climate change impacts, and the limited infrastructure for agricultural production which hinders agribusiness activities. Since 2014, urban farming programs have been implemented in Gresik by the Agricultural Extension, Fisheries and Forestry Agency (BP4K). However, these programs have encountered failures such as poorly maintained infrastructure and limited knowledge in agricultural technology leading to crop failures. Therefore, the Urban Farming Center has been established to support sustainable urban farming activities and serve as an educational and recreational facility for the community to apply urban farming principles with practical, economic, ecological, and aesthetic values.This aligns with the principles of Permaculture Design, which advocate for sustainable agricultural practices from farm landscapes to energy-efficient building concept.
