Abstract
Markets have an inseparable role in people's lives, which means that markets are not only considered as economic places, but also as social, cultural and political places. In its development, markets are classified into two types, namely traditional markets and modern markets. People know that traditional markets are synonymous with slums, cramped areas, bad smells, and inadequate facilities. The rapid growth of modern means that traditional markets are increasingly left behind because they provide less comfort for some people. As of 2018, there are 81 markets managed by the Surabaya city government, spread across all sub-districts in the city of Surabaya. However, there are still economic center areas that do not yet have traditional markets to support their economic activities, namely the Benowo area, Babat Jerawat. Apart from shopping, there are additional facilities at the market, namely in the form of a culinary center and other supporting facilities. By adopting the concept of Market Development in this design, it is hoped that it will become a traditional market that can develop in this modern economic and era, supported by contextual methods and a contemporary architectural approach.
