Abstract
Indonesia is an archipelago with a sea area of 5.8 million km². This sea area is larger than the land area, which is only 1.9 million km². Therefore, Indonesia has the potential to produce a large quantity of salt. The national demand for salt is increasing year by year. In 2014, the national salt demand reached 3.61 million tons, consisting of 1.48 million tons of consumption salt and 2.13 million tons of industrial salt. Hence, it can be said that domestic industrial salt production is still unable to meet the national industrial salt needs. This is related to the fact that the NaCl content required for industrial salt is quite high compared to consumption salt, thus domestic salt producers need to be able to produce industrial salt to avoid dependence on imports. Based on these considerations, the establishment of a Sodium Chloride (industrial salt) factory in Indonesia is deemed necessary, given the increasing demand for industrial salt in the country every year. The industrial salt factory using vacuum pan crystallizer technology is expected to produce 100,000 tons per year. The factory will be built in Sumenep, Madura, East Java. It is planned to operate continuously for 24 hours a day for 330 days a year, using raw materials such as local salt, Na₂CO₃, NaOH, and BaCl₂. Industrial salt products are beneficial for other industries such as the food and health industries, among others.
