Abstract

Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) propagation is generally done by grafting and the scion used as material are usually taken from mother plant with superior properties. Often the location of the mother plant far from the nursery makes the scion must be stored during the delivery process which causes the grafting to be delayed. This study aimed to assess avocado plant grafting growth using scion with various storage period and scion length. This study used a factorial completely randomized design with two treatment factors and three replications. The first factor is scion with various storage period (0, 3, 6 and 9 days) and the second factor is the length of the scion (5, 7,5 and 10 cm). The parameters observed were bud break age, shoot count, shoot length, leaf count and percentage of successful grafts. Interaction between storage period and scion length affected bud break age. Storage period of 0 days yielded optimal bud break age, shoot length, leaf count and percentage of successful grafts. Scion length of 10 cm led to the best bud break age, shoot count and leaf count, while 5 cm length resulted in optimal shoot length.
