Abstract

Batik has significantly improved the Indonesian economy and is an important component of the nation's cultural heritage. However, the environment is also negatively impacted by its expansion, especially because of the liquid waste it produces. Heavy elements such as chromium, which are harmful to the environment and human health, are present in this waste. Utilizing activated carbon from plastic waste as an adsorbent to extract heavy metals from liquid batik waste is one of the recommended solutions. The aim of this research is to find out how well activated carbon made from plastic waste, namely Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), adsorbs chromium from liquid batik waste. Based on research findings, activated carbon produced from PET plastic waste has a high iodine absorption capacity and meets quality criteria. With an absorption efficiency of 71.32%, pH 2 was proven to be the ideal pH for total chrome adsorption through testing. These results indicate that activated carbon derived from PET plastic waste has great potential as an adsorbent to reduce heavy metal contamination in liquid batik waste, thereby improving human health and environmental protection.
