Abstract
The liquid waste from laundry contains high levels of MBAS (Methylene Blue Active Substance) and phosphate parameters. This can affect the process of photosynthesis in aquatic plants and may impact the quality of water bodies. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of the electrocoagulation method with bioethanol as an electrolyte in treating laundry wastewater to reduce the levels of MBAS and phosphate, as well as to determine the optimal conditions for treating wastewater using the electrocoagulation method with bioethanol as an electrolyte. The combination of electrocoagulation and bioethanol is the method used to treat and/or reduce the levels of pollutants, especially MBAS and phosphate, in laundry wastewater before it is discharged into water bodies. The preliminary test results of the laundry wastewater showed MBAS at 263.39 mg/l and phosphate at 16.33 mg/l. The fixed variables used were a contact time of 90 minutes and a voltage of 12 volts. The results of the electrocoagulation process showed that the higher the voltage and the longer the contact time, the higher the percentage of removal achieved. The percentage removal of MBAS was 97.35% and phosphate was 66.93%. Meanwhile, after the addition of bioethanol, the best results were obtained with the addition of 20ml, resulting in a percentage removal of MBAS up to 97.71% and phosphate up to 75.20%.
