Abstract

Cellulose acetate can be obtained from solid palm oil waste with quite high cellulose content. Waste that can be used is empty bunches, shells and fibers. This research aims to determine the acetyl content and degree of substitution of the cellulose acetate produced. The activation stage was carried out by adding 50 ml of glacial acetic acid and stirring at a speed of 130 rpm at a temperature of 50 C for 3 hours. Next, 3 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid were added. The acetylation stage was carried out with variations of glacial acetic acid of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 ml and acetylation times of 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 minutes with a stirring speed of 300 rpm at a temperature of 25 C. In the hydrolysis stage, 2 ml of distilled water and 5 ml of glacial acetic acid were added with a reaction time of 30 minutes at a speed of 150 rpm at room temperature. Then add 1 gram of sodium acetate for 5 minutes. The best cellulose acetate content was 38.84% at an acetylation time of 60 minutes and a volume of glacial acetic acid of 30 ml with a degree of substitution of 2.36 (cellulose diacetate). The results obtained are not in accordance with SNI 0444: 2009 where the acetyl content must be 39-40%.
