Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country that has many natural resources. There are various natural resources that are rarely used to make something of value. One of them is young coconut fiber. Young coconut fiber contains 42.6% cellulose and 22% lignin. Young coconut fiber is isolated to obtain α-cellulose or high purity cellulose. The α-cellulose can be used as a heavy metal bioadsorbent. Therefore, this research chose young coconut fiber as the raw material for isolating α-cellulose. The aim of this research is to isolate α-cellulose from young coconut fiber for adsorption of heavy metals Cu2+ and Ni2+ on electroplating industry waste. This research was carried out using lignin delignification at a Na2SO3 concentration of 10.2; 15.3; 20.4; 25.5; 30.6% and the temperature used in the lignin delignification process is 60: 70; 80; 90; 100 ˚C. The best α-cellulose content was at a treatment temperature of 100 ˚C and a Na2SO3 solution concentration of 20.4% during the delignification process, namely 91.7%. For the heavy metal absorption process with isolated α-cellulose, the content of the heavy metal Nickel (Ni2+) was reduced by 59.6%, and the heavy metal Copper (Cu2+) was reduced by 69.2%.
