Abstract

Activated carbon with good absorption capacity can be obtained from solid palm oil waste with quite high cellulose content. Waste that can be used is empty bunches, shells and fibers. This research aims to determine the temperature conditions and carbonization time as well as the best type of activator that can produce activated carbon in accordance with SNI 06-3730-2021. The carbonization stage was carried out at temperatures of 250 oC, 300 oC, 350 oC, 400 oC, and 450 oC for 60 minutes, 75 minutes, 90 minutes, 105 minutes, and 120 minutes. Then 50 grams of carbon is taken and mixed into 100 ml of HCl activator solution with a concentration of 20%. The best activated carbon content was obtained with operating conditions, a carbonization temperature of 450°C and a carbonization time of 105 minutes, where the fixed carbon was 81.68%, the water content was 3.85%, the volatile matter was 10.29%, the ash content was 4.18%, the iodine absorption capacity was 763.98 mg/g, and the methylene blue absorption capacity was 178.82 mg/g. The results obtained are in accordance with SNI 06-3730-2021.
