Abstract

Lestari Sugar Factory stands as a testament to Indonesia's rich sugar-producing heritage, operating under the umbrella of PT Perkebunan Nusantara X (Persero) or PTPN X, a state-owned enterprise. Established in 1909, the factory is nestled in the village of Ngrombot, Patianrowo District, Nganjuk Regency, East Java. With a production capacity of 4000 tons per day in 2022, PG Lestari plays a pivotal role in the region's sugar industry. The sweet journey of sugar production at PG Lestari begins with the careful selection of sugarcane from the surrounding Nganjuk area. The extracted sugarcane juice, known as nira, embarks on a six-stage transformation process : Milling Station: The sugarcane undergoes a thorough grinding process to extract the maximum amount of nira. Water imbibition is employed to enhance extraction efficiency, ensuring minimal sugar content remains in the resulting bagasse. Purification Station: To remove impurities and refine the nira, calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) is added, allowing for the separation of these contaminants from the raw nira. Evaporation Station: The purified nira enters a series of multiple effect evaporators, where it is concentrated into a thick syrup (60% brix) through evaporation. Massecuite Station: The concentrated nira undergoes a crystallization process, transforming the liquid phase into sugar crystals with a size of 0.8 - 1 mm. This crystallization process yields a crystal-sugar solution known as massecuite. Spinning Station: The massecuite is subjected to a spinning process to separate the sugar crystals from the surrounding syrup. Packing Station: The final stage involves packaging the refined SHS (Superium Hoofd Suiker) sugar into 50 kg sacks, ready for distribution. Lestari Sugar Factory's commitment to quality and sustainability has earned it a reputation as a leading producer of sugar in East Java. Its dedication to innovation and continuous improvement ensures that the factory remains at the forefront of the sugar industry, contributing to the region's economic growth and prosperity.
