Abstract

Corn, a staple food crop worldwide, experiences a continuous rise in its annual production. Corn waste, particularly corn cobs, presents a valuable resource for activated carbon production. Activated carbon, a material with an extensive surface area, possesses the ability to adsorb a wide range of substances, including pollutants, heavy metals, and chemicals. One innovative approach to activated carbon production involves utilizing corn cobs and belimbing wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi) as an activator. Belimbing wuluh, an eco-friendly and natural material, proves to be more effective in activating carbon compared to chemical activators. The produced activated carbon is characterized based on SNI 06-3730-1995, encompassing the determination of iodine adsorption capacity, water content, ash content, volatile matter, and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). The research findings reveal that the generated activated carbon exhibits a high iodine adsorption capacity of 867.198 mg/g, water content of 6.76%, ash content of 1.194%, volatile matter of 17.021%, and a uniform porous structure.
