Abstract

Elephant grass is an upright annual plant that resembles sugar cane, has broad, thin leaves, has leaf veins and is easy to reproduce. Grass ash Elephants have a fairly high silica content, namely 67.3%, where the silica content in elephant grass ash is lower than in rice husks at 89.17%. However, elephant grass is a type of grass that is easy to find and its use is still less than optimal, namely only as animal feed in Indonesia, so this elephant grass has the potential to be an alternative source of silica xerogel. Silica xerogel can be synthesized through various processes, one of which is through the sol-gel process. The sol gel method is one method nanoparticle synthesis that applies 2 important phase stages, namely sol and gel. The sol-gel process is a process consisting of hydrolysis, condensation, aging and drying. This research was conducted to determine the effect of pH on silica xerogel content and the effect of aging time on particle size in making silica xerogel from elephant grass. In this research, elephant grass leaves were used as raw material. The sol-gel process was used to synthesize silica xerogel with a variable pH of 5; 6; 7; 8; and 9 and aging time 12 hours; 15 hours; 18 hours; 21 hours; and 24 hours. Obtained The best conditions for the synthesis of silica xerogel using elephant grass ash are at pH 8 and an aging time of 21 hours which produces silica xerogel with the highest content of 57.1% with a particle size of 5 μm.
