Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is the main component of bone mineral which is used as a bone graft substitute because it has bioactive properties, namely osteoconduction. The advantage of using hydroxyapatite as a biomaterial is due to its similarity to the main inorganic components that make up bones and teeth. The aim of this research is to synthesize hydroxyapatite from purebred chicken egg shells using phosphoric acid. Apart from that, it is also to find out the best conditions based on the variables used in the synthesis of broiler eggshell hydroxyapatite so that it can increase its economic value and increase the production of hydroxyapatite as a raw material for implants. This research uses a precipitation method which begins by dissolving the sample with phosphoric acid (0.2M; 0.3M; 0.4M; 0.5M; and 0.6M) then stirring at a speed of 400 rpm for 3 hours. Then the pH was varied (9, 10, 11, 12, and 13) using sodium hydroxide. Then left for 24 hours at room temperature and filtered, the filtrate is washed with distilled water until the pH is neutral then heated at 100℃. Hydroxyapatite powder was analyzed by FTIR. Based on the results of research that has been carried out, it is known that purebred chicken egg shells contain 99.37% calcium. FTIR analysis shows that there are hydroxyl and carbonate functional groups in the sample, phosphate functional groups do not appear in the sample because the carbonate functional groups formed will replace the hydroxyl or phosphate functional groups and produce carbonated-HA (CHA). This is because carbonate ions enter due to the slow rate of acid addition causing the carbonate to combine with the apatite structure.
