Abstract

This research aims to analyze audience reception in the film "Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee and Jessica Wongso". The research method uses a qualitative descriptive approach using a constructivist paradigm through data collection in the form of in-depth interviews, documentation and literature studies. The focus of this research uses analysis of Stuart Hall's reception theory which includes dominant hegemonic, negotiated position and oppositional position. The research results show that the reception of the film “Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee and Jessica Wongso" varies among informants, interpreting the film according to their abilities, personal experiences and various different backgrounds. Of the six informants, 2 (two) informants were in the dominant hegemonic position, 2 (two) informants were categorized as negotiated reading, and 2 (two) informants were in the oppositional reading category. This film provides a different perspective from the official version presented by the police and courts. Apart from that, this film inspires viewers to think critically and skeptically and to be aware of the possibility of legal errors and media manipulation when reporting on the coffee cyanide case.
