Abstract

Vertisol in general has a fairly high clay content, so that in the dry season cracks occur. Shrinkage and swelling alternately lead to changes in the availability of groundwater and ions. High clay content results in the binding of nutrients so that they cannot be available to plants, thus disrupting the growth of sweet corn. Improvement of vertisol with the addition of organic matter and sand is expected to increase nitrogen availability so that the growth of sweet corn becomes optimal. This study was arranged according to the Factorial Group Randomized Design (RAKF), and was repeated three times. The first factor is 7 kinds of organic matter: control (B0), banana peel compost + cow dung (B1), leaf litter compost (B2), hyacinth compost + cow dung (B3), humic acid (B4), humin (B5), and biochar (B6). The respective application doses for each treatment: compost 15 tons.ha-1, humic and humin acids 20 kg.ha-1, and biochar 1 ton.ha-1. The second factor is 3 levels of sand: 0% (P0), 20% (P1), and 40% (P2). The observed soil chemical parameters are pH, C-Organic, N-Available, and CEC. At the same time, the parameters of plant growth are leaf area and chlorophyll. The results showed that the application of organic matter and sand can affect nitrogen availability and plant growth. The best results are obtained on a combined treatment of banana peel compost + cow dung with 0-40% sand. Keywords : Vertisol, Organic Matter, Sand, Chemical Characteristics, Sweet Corn
