Abstract

Used cooking oil has considerable potential to be developed into fuel biodiesel because it has high levels of fatty acids. Biodiesel is known as a fuel friendly. NaOH and KOH are commonly used catalysts. Hence, research Kinetics of the Transesterification Reaction in Used Cooking Oil Using a Sodium Catalyst Homogeneous Hydroxide aims to determine the speed of the transesterification reaction as well activation energy in the transesterification process. Put the used cooking oil into a beaker glass then add methanol in a ratio of 12:1 then set the temperature and speed stir on the magnetic stirrer according to what has been determined. Temperature used namely 40oC; 45oC; 50oC; 55oC; 60oC with reaction time 10 minutes; 20 minutes; 30 minutes; 40 minute; 50 minutes. Once the temperature and stirring speed are appropriate, add methanol and catalyst according to a predetermined concentration. Then wait according to the time specified mixing. Once finished, leave the solution for 24 hours to dissolve separated and formed 2 layers. The two layers were separated with a separating funnel. So Analysis of the kinetics of the transesterification reaction was carried out. So you can know the activation energy resulting from the transesterification reaction is 1.49134.
